I woke up early a few days ago, not intentionally, but decided to make the best of it and go for a hike. I headed up to Donner Lake California with the intent of photography the first morning light on the Donner summit ridge line. After hiking in the dark and snow for several miles, I was unable to get to a spot for the shot I was after. In an effort to make the best of that situation, I hiked out to the train tunnels and show sheds that overlook the lake. These have been abandon some time ago in favor the train tunnel that cuts right though Donner Peak. The magnitude of the effort to make these tunnels through solid rock is amazing, added to this the more recent embellishment from modern cave artist and it makes for an interesting spot.
